Coping Mechanics
Coping Mechanics is an ink-jet print measuring 16 1/4" x 70" created in 2011 for an exhibition entitled Space Invaders at Rose Contemporary, In Portland, Maine. The curator invited me to participate based on the voyeuristic (i.e., "personal space invasion") aspect of my list-based work. I went through my vast collection of found, gifted, and bartered grocery and other "to do" lists and selected 9 of the most personal / revelatory lists, each of which directly or indirectly reveals its writer trying to deal with something challenging. Some of these are quite direct and self-explanatory, while others operate more abstractly and suggestively when taken out of context.
