During a lecture at Washington University last Fall, I invited students to a fifteen minute event the following day during which they could offload an item they were ready to rid themselves of in the University dumpsters. This was the first time I saw discarding became a spectator sport. Students cheered one another on, and documented the contents of the dumpster upon completion (last photo). One chap even climbed into the dumpster to retrieve a lamp that failed to break when he lobbed it to achieve a more satisfying discarding experience.
